1005 7th st NW - 22nd through 25th of September
No Kings Collective is proud to announce Submerge, a four day flash ‘art happening’. Submerge is about Talent, period. The goal of this space is to display home grown talent, both emerging and established through visual art, music, comedy, and culinary arts.
NKC will craft a temporary space on the Shaw Main Street Corridor in a merger of art and culture. Submerge comes to life in a dormant and underused retail property located at 1005 7th st NW Washington, DC. The space is rustic and industrial, but warm, it’s interior harkens to an earlier time in DC with exposed rafters, peeling wallpaper and original brick interior. Submerge is a trans-formative environment, one that will cater to the expectations and curiosities’ of the novice and the experienced onlooker.
The space FREE to attend and is open to the Public (Sunday exception) daily from the 22nd through 25th of September with daytime and and evening programming. For detailed listing visit schedule page.
Noon-3am w/evening programming starting at 9pm.
Truth Among Liars
Thursday 22nd - 9pm-2am
Submerge DC space will premier with “The Open”, the public’s first view of mural, installation, and 2-D works. Baltimore funnyman and part time superhero Desi Alexander AKA Purple Yamz, is also a feature of the night with his unique form of storytelling. A monster lineup of DC favorites DJ’s Tom Lim, Stereofaith, and Jerome Baker also grace this space doing what they do best. For the foodies alike out there every night will contain ‘Post-Modern’ Philipino inspired cuisine brought to you by Chef Tom Constantino and Erik Anderson of their project Tarsier.. A portion of proceeds from art sales will go to the Shaw Main Street to help keep Nuit Blanche an annual event in the District. http://www.shawmainstreets .org/
Friday 23rd - 9pm-3am
Mob Night contains one of the oddest and coolest mixtures of visual and audio with the brainchild of DJ 2 Tone Jones and Gerald Watson with the Shaolin Jazz : the 37th Chamber project. This collection started in early 2011 and infuses the sounds of the Wu Tang Clan, with the crisp yesteryear Blue note recordings of Miles Davis, Super Cat, and Herbie Hancock. A.C.M.E (A Company that Makes Everything) has one of the most experimental sounds makes them a hard comparison but of the most interesting sounds by far. And as per usual, one of DC’s Indie favorite sons who has been doing his own thing since day one, Tabi Bonney will bring it on home. Also DJ Phil Riehl l will………(Oh, yea no explanation needed).
Saturday 24th - 9pm-3am
“A Tune-Up” is described in the Urban Dictionary as slang for a beatdown. Submerge applies this verb to your brain via music and art, and Saturday is no exception. Saturday incorporates, Culinary, Fashion, Art, and Music into a memorable evening experience. Submerge partners with Art All Night DC to present Nuit Blanche!
Nuit Blanche is an annual all-night or night-time arts festival. A Nuit Blanche will have other rustic spaces, as well as cultural institutions open and free of charge. The centre of the city itself will be turned into a de facto art gallery, providing space for art installations, performances (music, film, dance, performance art), themed social gatherings, and other activities outside, all night. 7 PM -3:00 AM http://www.artallnightdc.com/ .
The fashion component… though fashion is always passively described as Art, sometimes fashion is just simply clothes, the stuff you wear. Only the likes of an Alexander McQueen push the limits to where one has a hard time describing what they are looking at, with a blurring of the line between fashion and art. . Quincy Jones x DYDC bring this concept to life creating “fashion art installations” that make the runway irrelevant. Fusing this with the sultry upbeat sounds of Alison Carney, and globetrotting District MC Oddisee, percussion and base from duo Jim From the Moon and a beat Set from August Flight Gordon, Q and DYDC create this merger of art, performance and fashion in something best described as a fashion happening. Also sprinkled in the evening will be another set by comedian Desi Alexander. Proceeds from libations and art sales go to benefit Dreams For Kids.http://dreamsforkids.org/
Sunday 25th - TBA evening
The HeArt, a self described monthly presentation of the cultural arts including but not limited to Music, Fashion, Poetry and Art. Including founders Rodney Rikai Thomas, Femi Adedoyin and Cue Gibson killing this concept in the Underdog environment of New Jersey, HG garners its talents from the four corners of the US and abroad. Jesse Boykins III, MoRuf, Ari Lennox, and Karega Bailey are just the tip of the iceberg. This showcase will be a treat to both the ears and eyes, with a full line up of live music, art, fashion, and more.
